Dragan Espenschied is Preservation Director at Rhizome, stewarding ArtBase, a collection of more than 2200 pieces of digital art and net art. With a background in net activism, net art, and electronic music, Espenschied’s work as a conservator is mostly focused on infrastructure and field-wide action concerning web archiving, emulation, and linked open data, rather than singular artworks.
Description of practice:
Rhizome was founded in 1996 as a born-digital institution as a community of fellow artists to champion new media art and digital art. Its collection of net art and software art spans 2200+ works, for 900+ local copies are available, with the goal to make them all accessible online. As the institution's preservation director, Dragan is building infrastructure, supports open source projects, and offers conservation services for museums and collections with a different focus that wish to collect or exhibit digital art.
