Heinali & Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko present Гільдеґарда (Live)
she/her + he/him
Fri May 30 | Muziekgebouw
Can we rely on ancient sound as a means to contest a dominant reality? With the spellbinding performance Гільдеґарда (Hildegard), the Ukrainian musicians Oleh Shpudeiko (Heinali) and Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko create a powerful bridge between the past and present. Taking the legacy of the 12-century mystic, healer and musician Hildegard von Bingen as a starting point, they built on her visionary ideas for self-transformation. The result is a touching piece, combining authentic Ukrainian folk singing with modular synthesis techniques drawing from high mediaeval polyphony and monophony.
Like Hildegard challenged the oppression of the male-dominated church, Гільдеґарда serves as a contemporary mirror – reflecting, processing and transcending a current traumatic wartime experience. The traditional singing of Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko connects with historical time and radically opens up a different account of spirituality.
