Jenny Hval presents Iris Silver Mist (Live)
Norwegian musician and writer Jenny Hval presents the Dutch premiere of her performance Iris Silver Mist on 30/5, at Muziekgebouw. Inspired by scent rather than sound, this project explores intimacy, absence, and transformation.
Jenny Hval does not allow herself to be caught within any category. At progressive festivals like Rewire and Le Guess Who? she drew packed houses with her mix of experimental pop songs, spoken word, electronics and soundscapes. Now she draws on her new album Iris Silver Mist (4AD), which includes music from her interdisciplinary performance I Want to Be a Machine.
Although Jenny Hval is best known as a singer, she is also essentially a writer. Gender, sexuality and identity are major themes in her work, from her poetic song lyrics to her surrealist, philosophical novels. She constantly challenges conventions by interweaving art, literature and music; music magazine OOR describes her as a “Norwegian all-rounder” for good reason.
Heinali & Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko present Гільдеґарда (Live)
Can we rely on ancient sound as a means to contest a dominant reality? With the spellbinding performance Гільдеґарда (Hildegard), the Ukrainian musicians Oleh Shpudeiko (Heinali) and Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko create a powerful bridge between the past and present. Taking the legacy of the 12-century mystic, healer and musician Hildegard von Bingen as a starting point, they built on her visionary ideas for self-transformation.
Гільдеґарда blends Ukrainian folk vocals with modular synthesis, and reflects on spirituality and resilience in times of war. Like Hildegard challenged the oppression of the male-dominated church, Гільдеґарда serves as a contemporary mirror – reflecting, processing and transcending a current traumatic wartime experience. The traditional singing of Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko connects with historical time and radically opens up a different account of spirituality.
