Sharing the first 8 acts & festival theme

The first eight acts of the 10th edition of FIBER Festival have been announced. It is a tip of the iceberg, with some special projects and collaborations. Under the umbrella of the theme Wildness, we question the need to rewild ourselves - both ecologically and in thought and action.

This edition, we also explore crossovers and overlaps between digital culture, visual arts, sound art and other performing arts. Works by makers who think and act across borders, work spatially and embodied or build bridges between different time periods. They often use elements of theatre and choreography.

The festival opens on Thursday 29 May with a live show by the New York duo LEYA - harpist Marilu Donovan and violinist/singer Adam Markiewicz - which straddles the line between medieval music, folk and experimental pop. Jenny Hval presents the Dutch premier of ‘Iris Silver Mist’ at the Muziekgebouw on Friday; a live performance inspired by smell rather than sound. The supporting act is the spellbinding performance Гільдеґарда (Hildegard) by Heinali & Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko, who bring an innovative interpretation of the famous 12th-century mystic and healer Hildegard von Bingen's music.

Diane Mahín plays GRUNT at the Brakke Grond, where the audience meets a woman who communicates exclusively by grunting. When she extends a tender hand, she can only express violence. Vica Pacheco takes visitors on a sensory journey ÉCLIPSIS through light and darkness. In this choreographic, musical composition with dancers, she uses clay sculptures as bodies of sound and weaves a poetic story about life and impermanence. Montreal-based artist Navid Navab asks the question: what happens when you unleash wild and chaotic processes on a traditional organ? In this solo acoustic performance, Navab improvises with Organism: a 1910 Casavant pipe organ, exploring how instability can work as an artistic starting point.

The festival's club programming will be announced soon. One name we can already share: Rotterdam-based Acidic Male will present her new album Flesh Reversal at Garage Noord. Raw, industrial soundtracks that symbolises rebirth and find joy in reclaiming sexuality.

A unique performance, in a very intimate setting, is Interferences: Live by meLê yamomo, gamelan master Krishna Sutedja (Gamelan Mudrasvara Ensemble) and composer-musician Thijs van den Geest. A live performance of a radio play about radio as an instrument of colonisation, and the countermovement that spread across the airwaves.

Last-but-not-least: this year's festival campaign is designed by Parabol Studio in collaboration with Leeza Pritychenko.

➤ We will announce the full programme in the coming weeks. But beware: for only a short period, the sharply discounted Full Festival ticket is still available for purchase. Don't sleep on it.

Stay tuned for more festival updates!
